El puerto de Ferrol está inmerso en la ambiciosa estrategia de convertir al muelle de Curuxeiras, junto al simbólico Arsenal, a la ciudad de Ferrol y al resto de las comarcas, en un atractivo para el mercado mundial de cruceros.

Desde 2003 el esfuerzo realizado por la Autoridad Portuaria de Ferrol-San Cibrao ha sido vital, unido al trabajo e interés de la Cámara de Comercio, el ayuntamiento, el IGAPE (Instituto Gallego de Promoción Económica) y el apoyo del Plan de Dinamización del Producto Turístico. Ahora se sumerge en un plan de relanzamiento de la dársena ferrolana para conseguir estabilizarse y crecer en la captación de escalas de cruceros.

La oferta ferrolana
Ferrol tiene el encanto de su ría, que regala una impresionante entrada arropada entre la belleza de los Castillos de San Felipe y La Palma. Sin duda, el atractivo que convierte la arribada en una experiencia única para los pasajeros de cada buque. Tampoco dejarán impasibles a los cruceristas su gran arsenal y las antiguas baterías defensivas, erigidas para defender el puerto de Ferrol.

El arsenal militar es uno de los lugares más importantes y emblemáticos de la ciudad y forma parte de la vida de Ferrol con un valor histórico y cultural imposible de calcular. Impulsado por el interés de los primeros Borbones en el siglo XVIII, fue Felipe V quien ordenó su construcción para convertir la ciudad en capital del departamento militar del noroeste de España. Ferrol contaba con el arsenal y los astilleros más modernos de España y se convirtió así en una de las primeras ciudades industriales.

Otro de los encantos para el turismo de cruceros es su relación con el Camino de Santiago, ya que la dársena ferrolana de Curuxeiras es la entrada en Galicia del los navegantes que deciden realizar el Camino Inglés hacia el corazón de la Ruta Xacobea. La ciudad recibe a los visitantes con el cariño propio de las tierras gallegas y les descubre sus playas y un centro urbano lleno de riqueza modernista y encanto. Compras, gastronomía, monumentos y parajes llenos de magia para los viajeros que profundizan en el interior de Ferrol. Suelen ser algo más de ocho horas en las que los cruceristas disfrutan de todo lo que les ofrece la ciudad e, incluso, visitan otros lugares de referencia de las comarcas de Ferrolterra, Eume y Ortegal, como pueden ser recorridos de gran belleza paisajística como los acantilados de Herbeira; localidades de honda tradición marinera, como es el caso de Cedeira y lugares de peregrinación, como el santuario de San Andrés de Teixido, una pequeña aldea ubicada en lo alto de la sierra de A Capelada.

En la actualidad, el esfuerzo que se realiza en la recepción de cruceros es muy importante y el puerto es consciente de que es necesario ofrecer a los turistas que llegan a la ciudad propuestas de ocio diferentes y atractivas. La estrategia de relanzamiento del puerto ferrolano contempla además la mejora de sus infraestructuras y sus servicios complementarios, de tal manera que Ferrol se convierta en una moderna terminal.

La Autoridad Portuaria de Ferrol-San Cibrao promociona la ciudad y sus comarcas como producto turístico acudiendo cada año a las ferias más importantes del mundo de los cruceros, para lo que cuenta con el apoyo de la Cámara de Comercio de Ferrol. Durante este año ha asistido por séptima vez a la feria internacional de Seatrade de Miami, dedicada al turismo de cruceros. Para reforzar esta faceta de los muelles ferrolanos se acudirá por primera vez a otra cita sectorial de relevancia, la Seatrade Europe, que se celebra en Hamburgo (Alemania) del 15 al 17 de septiembre.

En ellas, la comunidad portuaria se encarga de promocionar tanto el puerto interior como el exterior y presentar a los muelles ferrolanos como una opción estratégica para las rutas marítimas de la fachada atlántica, y a Ferrol como un producto turístico interesante y con alternativas de ocio atractivas. Hay que destacar también la gran labor que se realiza desde la principal consignataria de cruceros en Ferrol, la compañía Rubine e Hijos.

Un poco de historia
El puerto de Ferrol consiguió introducirse en el mercado de cruceros con la llegada del trasatlántico “Black Prince” a la dársena de Curuxeiras el 14 de octubre del 2004. La oferta turística terminó de convencer a los responsables de la naviera. Hoy, Fred Olsen y Saga son las compañías que más han confiado hasta el momento en las cualidades del puerto de Ferrol como receptor de escalas.

Desde el primer crucero que atracó en 2004 en el puerto de Ferrol son ya 21 las escalas que ha recibido la dársena de Curuxeiras. La ciudad ha sido anfitriona de más de 12.000 turistas llegados por mar. Las rutas que cubren los buques que pasan por el puerto ferrolano suelen estar definidas entre las islas británicas y el mar mediterráneo. También acogen aquellos barcos que cambian, tras el verano, del circuito del Báltico al circuito del Mediterráneo.

Ferrol looks for its site in the world map of cruises

Six years after receiving the first cruise, the Port Authority of Ferrol-San Cibrao starts a re-launching of the Basin aiming at stabilising itself and growing in this sector.

The port of Ferrol is immersed in the ambitious strategy to turn the Curuxeiras dock , next to the symbolic Arsenal, the city of Ferrol and the rest of regions into an attraction for the world market of cruises. Now it immerses in a re-launching plan of the Ferrol basin to succeeded in stabilizing itself and attracting cruise calls. First of all has the charm of its estuary, which offers an impressive entrance sheltered among the beauty of the San Felipe and La Palma castles.

Certianly the attractive that turns the arrival into a unique experience for passengers of each ship. Its great arsenal and the old defensive batteries, built to defend the port of Ferrol will not either leave cruisers indifferent.

The military arsenal is one of the most important and emblematic places of the city and is part of the life of Ferrol with a historic and cultural value impossible to calculate. Promoted by the interest of the first Bourbons in the XVIII century, Felipe V ,ordered its construction to turn the city into the capital of the military department of the Northwest of Spain. Ferrol had the most modern arsenal and shipyard of Spain and became in this way one of the first industrial cities.

Undoubtely one of the main charms for cruise tourism is its relation with the Camino de Santiago, since the Curuxeiras basin of Ferrol is the gateway to Galicia for navigators that decide to make the Camino Inglés towards the heart of the Jacobean Route. The city welcomes visitors with the typical affection of Galician lands and discovers them its beaches and an urban centre full of modernist richness and charm. Shopping, gastronomy, monuments and spots full of magic for travellers aiming at deepening into el Ferrol. They usually are more than eight hours in which cruisers enjoy all offered by the city and, they even visit other reference places of the regions of Ferrolterra, Eume and Ortegal, routes of great scenic beauty as the cliffs of Herbeira; towns with very strong marine tradition as Cedeira and pilgrimage sites, as the sanctuary of San Andrés de Teixido, a small village located in the top of the Capelada mountain range.

The effort made in the cruise reception is very important and the port is aware that it is necessary to offer tourists arriving to the city different and attractive leisure proposals. The re-launching strategy of the Ferrol port as a product of interest for the great shipping companies, contemplates in addition the improvement of its infrastructures and its complementary
services, in such a way that Ferrol becomes a modern terminal.

The Port Authority of Ferrol-Sn Cibrao promotes the city and its regions as tourist product attending every year to the main exhibitions of the world. This year it has attended for the seventh time to the international Seatrade exhibition of Miami, devoted to cruise tourism. Facet of the Ferrol docks the port will be present by first time in another significant appointment of the sector, the Seatrade Europe, held I Hamburg (Germany) from September 15 to 17. In both, the port community is responsible for introducing the Ferrol docks as a strategic option for maritime routes of the Atlantic façade and to Ferrol as an interesting tourist product and with attractive leisure alternatives. It has to be also emphasized the great task carried out by the main cruise shipping agent in Ferrol, the company Rubine e Hijos.

The port of Ferrol succeeded in entering into the cruise market with the arrival of the cruise “Black Prince” to the Curuxeiras basin in October 14, 2004. The tourist offer finally convinced the responsible people of the shipping company. Fred Olsen and Saga are the companies that have relied most so far on the qualities of the port of Ferrol as call receptor.

Since the first cruise which called in 2004 at the port of Ferrol, the Curuxeiras basin has already welcomed 21 calls. The city has been hostess 12.000 tourists arrived by sea. The routes covered by vessels going through the port of Ferrol are currently defined between the British Islands and the Mediterranean sea. They also welcome those ships that after the summer change from the Baltic circuit to the Mediterranean.
